Amongst these hills, the calamity our nation seems poised to take on the teeth resonates with a knowing nod. This County of Sullivan has known more tough times than prosperous, more need than excess. Time and time again outsiders have arrived at its borders making promises that evaporated long before they developed, and the confidence man behind the false elixir disappeared never to be seen again. These movements are not viewed as broken promises. They were never bought into in the first place.
I bless the stars that led me to this valley to live and learn from its people. They know how to produce a living off an unforgiving landscape. They know how to create an economy that weaves the community into its exchange. They know that having enough, is enough. They give credit where credit is due, both finacially and in the form of praise. They know how to hold their tongues when an outsider tries to sell them yet another pipe dream.
I wonder how long it will take for our nation to move beyond myths laid out in “A Death of a Salesman” and “The Iceman Cometh.” If there’s a lead toward any such solution anywhere, I’m tracking it in these hills…
