Weaving the two threads of Social Media

Two threads, that’s all.  Social.  Media.

Both are essential. The willingness to engage people and the implementation of the digital tools.  Neither predominates, they work in conjunction, just as two threads in a sewing machine are needed to make a stitch.  But the stitch always binds a third: the fabric.

Two threads binding fabric and to build out the analogy: Social, Media, and Being. (OK, OK I know, only invoke Heidegger at the risk of loosing even the few readers I have.  But for those of you that are still with me…)

It’s not simply the overly social and the expert media that translates into success in social media, but binding ones engagement to the life you are living.  Sharing from a place of authenticity, from your deepest interests, your passionate cause…your need.

When the two threads manage to extend and render our lives digitally, then the resulting embroidery nothing short of a marvel.

  • I'm all about nerdiness. Keep those interesting, potentially abstruse references coming!

  • Hey Richard,
Very thought provoking, as always. You've highlighted an important motivation (for me, at least) behind engaging social media strategies - namely, giving expression to that which moves me, that which I think defines me. If a personal blog or twitter stream isn't authentic, I don't see the point.

Of course, knowing that (or at least believing it) doesn't mean authenticity naturally follows. It's one of the ironies for me, actually. I have no motive to be anything other than authentic, yet as I begin this effort (I'm in my first 4 months), I still find it difficult. I'm hopeful that's just the 'first day jitters' coming through. We'll see, I guess.

    Thanks, as always.

    Good analogy.

  • Nice analogy. And I am with you in terms of perceiving social media as a new way of Being. It seems to force us to self-discovery and advancing our passions - a new understanding of maturity and the fulfilled life.
