Hi Libby,
It was a great memory building thing for the two of us and I\\'m looking forward to our next cache adventure on Cape Cod later this month. Thanks for the visit and I\\'ll see you on twitter.

Hi Richard,
Sorry for the disappointing experience with geocaching. As the author of the
Ranger Rick article on the subject, it certainly was NOT my intention to set your
family up for this kind of thing. Hopefully you've had many successful geocaching
adventures since you wrote about this one!

Warmest regards to you and your family,

In the end, the cache was not found...but our enthusiasm to find others has not been dampened.

So, did you eventually find the cache? Sometimes the greatest adventures begin with a miscalculated destination. I find the adventure to be the motivator for my favorite geocache outings (most rewarding when it results in a successful find, as well). A great family activity

Hi Richard,
My takeaway is this...technology or not, the value is in the doing. Ben 'expanded his sense of capability' by trying something new, connecting with the natural world, putting forth some effort (with your guidance) and feeling the sense of accomplishment that comes from that process.

The intended outcome (finding the cache) becomes a secondary concern. You, and Ben, got what mattered.

I believe, if used with thought and sometimes caution, technology can help you in just about every area of your life. Of course, I own a website development company, so I may be biased. Your story, however, highlights how technology can enhance an experience; it doesn't have to take away from the beauty of nature, or anything else.

In our school we use geocaching in a number of different classes (science to social studies). The ability to take learning outside the classroom is a powerful tool. Like the situation you presented, sometimes the lesson is in the difficult situation. Some of the caches are hard to find, or not replaced. How do we handle that? As you showed, we learn. We learn that life doesn't go as planned, and we are more capable of handling things than we think.

Side note: Your adventure reminded me of of a scene from the movie "The Peaceful Warrior"....
