Red and Orange Butterfly on a yellow flower - ...

Had the amazing experience of watching the Diving Bell and the Butterfly on DVD a few days ago, and the story has had a cathartic effect on my psyche.  Brief synopsis is all I’d like to leave you with for a New Year’s reflection: The main character Jean-Dominique Bauby, an editor at Elle, has a paralysing stroke in his early forties.  The movie chronicles his journey of writing a book by blinking each time the correct letter of the alphabet  is read to him.

Writing a book with one eye blinking.

Happy New Year’s…may the insurmountable disclose it’s path to you in 2009.

  • I think the life treats you the way you want to be treated. If we really want to be happy and in peace state of mind then, we need to think in that way.
I hope 2009 brings all the happiness to everyone..:)
  • Acceptance is a powerful tool in the tool bag...Thanks for sharing
  • Thank you for sharing this. To have the courage to start such an endeavor is an achievement as such.

I have not seen the film, but your post reminds me of the Zen attitude "the way is the goal". It is the process that counts - not it's end.

  • What a lovely inspiring post (happily yet again)!

Alas, most of us "blink" our lives away ungratefully...that one's life would depend on a blink is a sobering slap of wisdom for me...thank you!

    Humbly Grateful,

  • Liz Strauss and I had a discussion last fall about commitment and determination. This example clarifies for me why Liz's stressed determination as more crucial then commitment.
  • Happy New Year to you!

What an act of faith and dedication and courage to write a book one letter at a time. Seems overwhelming! This reminds me that every road is walked step by step (blink by blink).

  • Sometimes it takes extreme examples to remind us of our exquisite good fortune. Perspective is a funny thing.

But on that last note, I feel the energy of it building. I don't think it's just me. There seems to be a general agreement among us that 2009 will usher in something important, something big. The path to the insurmountable, perchance?

Welcome, new year...I'm very pleased to meet you.
