straussLiz Strauss presented her ideas on using blogging as a platform for building community at WordCamp Las Vegas today.  Known for her role in identifying and promoting the value of her SOB’s, Successful and Outstanding Bloggers, Liz has extensive experience in building relationships through digital media.

Presentation takeaways:

Conversation has changed since Liz has started.  The conversations have moved, and now we have a tri-dimensional  conversation.  Liz noted that we are having conversations not only with those we are speaking to but also with the eavesdroppers, who present the second level of participation.  Then there are future participants, who will access the content through search later on.

Liz continued to say the challenge of bringing people into the conversation depended on moving past being remarkable and becoming simply irresistible.

Twitter has given her a platform with breath while her blog provides depth.

The way you build a community is you hang out with one best friend.

You don’t want to be famous because that involves being on the pedestal.  You can’t get any work done on a pedestal.

Be the guide on the side, but not the sage on the stage.

Thank you and your welcome most important messages to put out there (The possibility of saying thank you with sub-text).

Her original presentation outline, the script that she left behind once the presentation began.

  1. Show up
  2. Be in with both feet
  3. Be a friend first
  4. Blog your experience
  5. Don’t tie things up in a bow
  6. Be trustworthy
  7. Start small … think BIG

In my experience, when your looking to find ways to build community engagement, Liz is the best place to turn.
