snake-eggs

I’ve been traveling for five days and greeted my almost seven year old son at the breakfast table this morning with stories of the desert; the wild horse I could hear but not see, the Indian petroglyphs, the hundreds of acres of fire scarred cactus “…and oh yeah…I got you something. Something you can put in your science corner.  Real rattlesnake eggs.”

Handing him the envelope, I made sure to point out the importance of the warning printed on the front: “It says to keep in a cool place to prevent hatching…”

He took the envelope from my hands and eager to see the contents he opened and found instead the fright of his life.  As the envelope sprang with action he dropped it and ran into the next room screaming SNAKES!

When he saw me rolling with laughter he knew he’d been had.  Good naturedly he came back and said “let me see that!” The next five minutes we spent laughing together as I showed him the spring mechanism made from wire, a washer and a rubber band. “Pretty scary, right Dad, pretty scary.”

Beware the next time you visit.  Ben is dying to show someone his rattlesnake eggs.

  • I'm such a sucker and a wimp! I got "pranked" just by reading this!

(Of course, reptiles are my biggest phobia next tor rodents) :0)

    Great post, Richard!
  • Henie,
    Thanks for playing along...boo!
  • A great archetypal experience for $1.25. To encounter fear, put it into a different context were you can handle it or even play with it and share this procedure with your loved ones.

  • Detlef,
It's similar to the need to read the real Grimm's fairy tales instead of the Disney-fied versions. Yes, we all know the fairy god mother grants three wishes, but do we know that Celtic Queen Maeve will grant the three deepest desires of your heart if you can speak them in your next breath...

Classic- I might have a kid just to reenact this event. :-)

  • Jay, that would be as dramatic an unintended consequence of writing this post that I could ever possibly imagine...
  • HA! Now that's a good one! I bet you went to the Valley of Fire didn't you? I LOVE that place! http://spedr.com/55ao0

  • Julie, Yes...and thank you for sharing that photo of you there.
  • oh my God! that was definitely some prank

Once my dad was siting next to me and telling me a bed time tale. I wanted a ghost story and he was telling me a real spooky one.
As he was telling me the story, he put his leg beneath my cot and pushed the cupboard door which was open...and I screamed at the top of my voice, seeing the door move on its own!
and the next few mins I was shivering and crying!...then it took a long time for mom n dad to persuade me to sleep
I can never forget that prank my dad played!
    :-)

  • Sophie, Your comment reminds me that beneath the playfulness, there's an interesting relationship to initiation rituals, that fears might be encountered and dealt with in a ritual context.

    Awesome!
  • Glad you liked it Bev.
  • cllecr
I had one of those! Of course, growing up in AZ meant most everyone I knew to lure had already seen it... the most perfect time it was used as a prank was when my dad handed it me... I was probably about 7.
  • cllecr...well you know then, you really know.
  • Awesome. I'm next!
  • Your on Kate...(BTW we need to meet and talk.
  • Dan Fuoco
Priceless! Some things money can buy, but for everything else, there's this great practical joke.
  • Dan, not bad at all for $1.25...
  • Great story! I can remember having an uncle that was a classic prankster. Brings back great memories.
