Portrait of Childhood

Over the last two months, Judith and Ben have been spending a great deal of time together in the studio creating this life size portrait.  Judith paints her subjects from life, not using photographs.  Its an amazing process to be part of, though seldom do people get the chance to “sit” for a portrait these days.

Much of the time posing was aided by listening to the audio book of Treasure Island.  I like how the articles of the costume seem only to objectify where the imagination has led.

The portrait pays homage to Manet, whose image of the fife player can be seen in the open book on the floor.

  • I really appreciate what you are doing. Today you won't find it. when we visited our grandmother in charleston, wva at age 5 each of us girls(three of us) had our portrait painted I was sitting in a rocking chair and each new day our grandmother would make sure the dress was clean for the next day the lady painted our portrait. To day I my hanging in our living room. (note) when my dad was alive each portait was on his walls and the way they were painted you could stand in the center of the room and each of us were looking at that person. I started oil painting in 06 but going to start it up , would like to try my skill at human faces. will see.
  • Hi Marge,
Thanks for sharing with us your experiences living with portraits. If there is an art center near you, consider studying portraiture in a class setting. It is difficult, so having someone to help guide you can be a real help.

It's neat to do tribute pieces, no?
