David Meerman Scott launched his new book World Wide Rave this afternoon at NYU’s Kimmel Center to a full room of marketing types from the corporate world, academia and the non-profit sector. Mr. Scott’s humor and interesting examples carried his audience right to the final participatory photograph. Not sure how many in the room caught on, but in using his flip video camera and digital camera, he was demonstrating just how easy it is to generate content for the new media.
David’s a consummate presenter. I was fortunate to catch him last fall at the New Marketing Summit. Though he presented on the same topic, today’s presentation was both refined and chock full of new examples keeping me engaged. A natural teacher, he has thought deeply into the subject and recognizes that the principles to success are not complicated but instead demand a shift in perspective.
The six rules for a creating a World Wide Rave:
- Nobody cares about your product (except you).
- No coercion required.
- Lose control.
- Put down roots.
- Create triggers that encourage people to share.
- Point the world to your (virtual) doorstep.
What impressed me most scanning the book for the first time while riding the PATH train over to Hoboken was how successfully David questions his readers, creating a type of interchange more reminiscent of social media, even across the static pages of the printed book.
Next stop for the World Wide Rave book tour is SXSW this Saturday afternoon at 3.55 pm.
(Also, a special bonus for the next few days only, World Wide Rave can be downloaded to the Kindle for free from Amazon. Go grab a copy, it’s full of interesting stories and clear strategies.)

...and so it begins
