Travel Bags

img01926Carry-ons both, the clothes in a LL Bean travel pack, the computer gear in a Overland shoulder bag.  What’s most difficult for me to pack on each journey are the additional resources, those items that might stimulate creative opening without breaking my back in the process of hauling them.

This time I have packed four items: The Transcendent Function by Carl Jung, Call Me Ishmael by Charles Olson, World Wide Rave by David Meerman Scott, and The War of Art by Stephen Pressfield.  Also I grabbed a journal of mine off the shelf inspired by this post from Sid. Oh, and I have an audio recording of Moby Dick on my blackberry as well.

The journal, titled Slack Tide,  is mostly from a one month period this time of year a decade ago.  Within it contains the dialogue of one of my earliest experiences with active imagination.  From first glance, the theme emerging : “the more things change the more they stay the same.”

What are your must take alongs when you hit the road?

  • You were serious about liking my post. Olsen and Melville. I'm not sure I can be that serious for that long any more.

  • Must-haves are journal, laptop, BlackBerry and CAMERA! My back is usually broken just by these without the other essentials like clothes, etc. :~) (My camera and lenses alone require their own backpack!)

Safe flight, Richard! Can't wait to hear the words of wisdom you'll bring back!

  • Like you, essentials are books, journal and pen. And I always bring more books than I can read. I'm curious, how long are you gone? And did you pack more than you could read? Take care and be safe.

  • Hey Demian and Sid,
As for the books, the studies and the seriousness...Need to note that I have read what I have brought many times before, except the World Wide Rave which I finished on the plane. So these works are not so much to read as to mine. They represent a in text, a metaphor of my "matter map".

    Hi Henie,
I've so slimed down on gear for blogging, using only the camera on my bberry and a flip video. It all the cords that turn my bag into a jumble...
