A view of Herban Paradise in Northampton, MA

I continue to learn about the value of connecting in the real world after establishing a relationship though social media.  Now when I travel, I let folks know I’ll be in the area and see what might develop. Driving back from the Hubspot workshop, a was invited to make a pit stop visit to the Paradise City Herbal in Northampton, MA.

I first started interacting with Shari (@herban_paradise) last fall on twitter and have been a subscriber to her blog ever since.

The hour that unfolded while walking through this amazing “micro-farm” with Shari taught me many things.  We discussed the challenges of sunlight within limited spaces, strategies for introducing new varieties, and cottage industry dilemmas amongst other things, including both of our journeys with social media.  All the while we were absorbing the beauty of the plants and a visit by a hawk overhead.

What Shari and I both know from our separate, but in many ways analogous paths:  organic development has it’s own rhythm and growth comes through the trial and error of each new introduction.  It’s funny how the same message was delivered this morning at the Hubspot workshop.  Remember that it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

I head back to the Catskill’s with my head full of new learnings, and a flat of Shari’s Holy Basil.

  • Hey Allie,
The basil is a variety from India. I'm so looking forward to our basil crop after last years failure and no pesto...

  • Mmm, Holy Basil. Sounds interesting. I planted cinnamon basil this year and have almost killed the plants plucking off leaves for making various pastas. It tastes like basil with a warm anise note. Very good.
