small falls in the Catskills

Today I had a chance to hike along the Devil’s Path with my good friend Doug.  We summited Surgarloaf Mountain during our seven plus mile journey, and the lookout to the South did not disappoint, taking in a wide swath of wilderness.

Much of the beauty came from less grand vistas along the way, like the small falls pictured and the beaver dam that stretched some seventy feet.  There were interesting quarry sites dating perhaps from a hundred and fifty years ago.  Then there was the grouse we flushed out of the undergrowth and the bear cub that ran across the road while driving in.  It jumped up a tree.  Oh, and a toad at 3500 feet.  They say the devil is in the details.  Perhaps that’s not what they meant?
