My time in Northern Idaho taught me about huckleberries, the false practice of salting gold rush sites and the rapid development of ghost towns (gold would be scattered across a site by musket leading the unsuspecting to buy up claims thinking they had a hot site), the manner land was surveyed by the Idaho Meridian, and the back story of the Ruby Ridge crisis.

    I spent my most story filled summer in Northern Idaho in 1972, working for the Forest Service in the Cour de alene National Forest and living in Wallace, a town of 1500 with 5 blatant whorehouses.

  • While canoeing I was told an intersting story from the settlemnt days
    of a Madame who was spurn by a lover back in New York and made quite a
    reputaion for herself in these emerging towns, at first for her wild
    side, and then later, when severe sickness spread through the
    community, for her selfless nursing of the sick and suffering...
