It’s a sticking point of mine ever since I stared the dragon of hypocrisy in the eyes and saw my own eyes looking back at me. And it’s of interest to me how our current system nourishes this spiritual illness.
In our politics we hear both sides of the aisle (really listen and you’ll hear it) slinging the “you lie” into national attention. But in as much as our system is geared toward holding control, hypocrisy is an inevitable outcome. In the end, our politics has developed into a complex system whereby each act needs to be weighed against the ability to hold or regain power. Therefore the inherent hypocrisy compounds upon the previous until the players have no choice but to reframe the quicksand as terra firma and march on regardless of the consequences.
Power is a devilish reality. Attaining it seems to justify whatever the cost. And the lie is clearly the easiest act in our toolbox to control others. So where do we go from here? How do we as a culture move past this lesson which we continually fail. As Jung dared to claim, we are but in caveman kindergarten. Until we really solve the power/control dilemma, my sense is we will not be promoted to the first grade.
