(…picking up the theme from yesterday’s post on the difficulty of sitting with ones dilemmas…)

In alchemical terms we are talking calcination, “which is that brought about by actual fire, from wood, coals, or other fuel, raised to a certain temperature.”

Not having an answer is living without resolution and it’s been my experience that the uncomfortable situation is experienced like a rising temperature.  Resolution by evasive means takes care of the “heat” but also brings a new set of problems due to the fallacy that has been submitted to as a solution.  Great word solution.  There’s coolness in the liquid bath that becomes desirable as an escape from the heat.

The challenge is to remain in the heat when one does not have an honest solution.  I think it comes down to toast.  (great portrait of a modern alchemist in this clip)

It often seems you're speaking directly to me Richard. I'm sure you don't intend it, but I appreciate it nonetheless. I've run up against this challenge so many times I've lost count. Often times, I make a choice that reduces the heat (anxiety/uncertainty/fear) quickly, but suffer the long-term discomfort of settling. No good.

  • (A little secret if you promise not to tell)...me too.
