Rest, Not Escape

I’ve been battling in my head about the differences between laziness and leisure.

This is where I’m at:

Laziness, or chillin’ as some of the youth I work with like to call it, is at root a regressive posture. It’s an escape from the particular challenges that have aligned within a life.

Leisure is restful participation and by nature it tends to be creative and prospective. The lowering of stress and the slackening of pace does not equate to avoidance. In fact, it often opens up new possibilities that might have been missed otherwise.

Breath deep. You’ll end up perpetually tired if your priority is to run away.

  • Maybe think of laziness as an avoidant defense. Interestingly, do something else however productive, might also be an avoidant defense akin to laziness.

Liesure is a form of play, and to me suggests constructive engagement. Maybe avoidant liesure is lazy.

There are resource issues. Gathering, harboring and using energy. Rest is here somewhere. I'm too busy to know where.
