Orbs

Ornaments placed on the tree seem to capture this symbol of the autonomous aspects of the psyche quite well.

I can vividly recall the favorite ornament of my youth, a small ball, greenish, cut with a small plastic reindeer within.

As our family accrues tradition as we visit this side of the Earth’s orbit, many of our memories find anchors on different ornaments. It feels like objects in the memory must get tied in a similar manner. I’m sure the brain science can already explain the process, but experience seems more on the scale of pulling out the crates and unwrapping the tissue paper which protects the delicate orbs…

What other associations does decorating the tree bring up for you?

  • I don't have positive associations (originating in childhood) surrounding holidays.

  • "Rosebud" is perhaps the most effective articulation of one word in
    all of 20th Century art...

It's presentation by Wells seems to have struck a collective chord
into the "mystery of the black chrysanthemum" as Charles Olson called
it...the flower of the soul within...
