“well, my window
looked out on the Squero where Ogni Santi
meets San Trovaso
things have ends and beginnings”

Ezra Pound, Canto 76

As we turn the page on the aughts and plunge headlong into the next decade I find myself taking the measure of the emerging Self.

What were your most pressing concerns at Y2K?  Do you remember?  And today’s concerns, will they have any bearing in 2020?

As I attempt to wring the essence of out of my accrued life and at times feel dismay at the predominance of ashes over burning coals, I’m struck by the accurate assessment I found in Thich Nhat Hanh:  “The Question that arises:  Do you have time to love?”

All else is ashes…

  • Beautifully written... and leaves the mind to ponder... Cheers into the New Year!
  • So beautiful Richard...."Do you have time to love?" It is the essence of life. Wishing you a beautiful year to come embraced with your loved ones. Thank you for your inspiring words that I have read off and on through out this year. Cheers!
  • Richard, Like you, I'm not sure I'd recognize myself circa Y2K -- though I remember feeling a certain thrill at the potential for a major shift should those two little zeroes really precipitate the cataclysm of major system failures that many predicted. How would I react, what would I do...?

This decade winds down with much the same thrill in place for me -- I spent 2000-8 casting about. This past year I got to see what I could do with a new beginning. It was thrilling. Exhausting, but thrilling. This year I will participate in further evolution, and am thrilled, but am also hell bent on balance, that time to love (and run).

All the best in 2010, thanks for your food for thought this year.
  • Y2K was a crazy time. Had been prepping for computer system switch over to a new system for our distribution company, was in graduate school, and was winding down a Dot Com startup that couldn't find funding.

This year is more about funneling my energy in directions that serve me better...which means I can help serve others better.

    Anything shifts for you Richard?
  • I hardly recognize that Y2K version of myself as my priorities have
shifted so far. I'm clearly more about the embers now...
